A Real Woman

Yesterday, I gave a list of what I believed does and does not make up a "real man."  Today, I would like to share the story of a "real woman."  I am proud to say I know this woman.

Last week, my co-worker left for lunch.  As she waited in her truck for her lunch companion, she witnessed a boyfriend yelling at his girlfriend as they both pushed small children in strollers.  To her shock, she then witnessed him slap her.

I personally don't recommend her next action though to be honest, I would do the very same thing.  She jumped out of her truck and confronted the abuser.  She told him she had seen what he had done and was calling the police.  The girlfriend begged her not to trying to convince her it was no big deal.  My friend did the right thing and called the police.

When they arrived, she gave her statement.  The police then went to find the couple who had proceeded down the street.  Luckily, we live in a state where the cooperation of the victim is not needed to file domestic violence charges.  Hopefully, this will be the wake-up call that this girlfriend needs.

I am so incredibly proud of my friend.  She is a true example of a "real woman."

Real Men

One thing that was brought up over and over again in the discussions regarding domestic violence was the subject of "real men."  I happen to have a few thoughts on the matter!

1.  Real men do not curse at women.

2.  Real men do not call women vulgar names.

3.  Real men do not raise their hand to women even if only to threaten.

4.  Real men do not lay their hands on women in anger...EVER.

5.  Real men do not denigrate another man's woman.

6.  Real men do not disrespect their mothers, ex-wives, or complete strangers.

7.  Real men treat women with respect.

8.  Real men protect the women they love.

9.  Real men defend those women they see being abused.

10.Real men do not support men who abuse.

I am sure there are more that other women can add to this list but I think it pretty much covers the basics.  As women, and especially as mothers, we have a responsibility to settle for no less than a real man and to raise our sons to be the same.

Jerri

Open Floodgates

A couple of weeks ago, I dedicated the entire week of blog posts to domestic violence.  I was among a large number of bloggers with the same focus as it was also leading the national news.

Little did I know how it would open the floodgates.  I have heard from so many women who are living with physical, emotional, and verbal abuse as well as those living with infidelity.

It broke my heart to know so many women are living in such situations.  I have felt so helpless, feeling that the small bits of advice I could give were completely inadequate.  At best, I simply provide an example of someone who has survived and is beginning to thrive.

Then the light bulb went off.  These women weren't asking me for a quick fix.  More than anything, they just wanted to talk to someone who had been there and knew what they were feeling.  They needed to share with someone that didn't need an explanation of the fear.  I don't need that explanation...I know it intimately.

For any other women out there who haven't talked...find someone like me.  We are out there by the thousands.  We care, we love you, and we listen.

Jerri

Frugal Christmas?

In this age of electronic everything, is it possible to have a frugal Christmas?  What if you made the commitment to go electronic free for the holiday?

One way to go about it is the Four Gifts.  It is a simple concept, and it makes gift buying a breeze!

The Four Gifts

1.  Something you want

2.  Something you need

3.  Something to wear

4.  Something to read

Take a moment and think how you can apply the Four Gifts to the people you do major buying for at Christmas.  I will bet it probably won't take that long for you to complete the list for each person!

This is just one way to make it a frugal Christmas.  Any ideas?

Treading Water

Have you ever noticed Thursday is the longest day ever?  Think about it.  You are already exhausted from working all week.  It still isn't Friday.  Really...can this day be longer?

I have tried and tried to think of ways to make Thursdays better.  I use a fancier mug to drink my coffee in the hopes of starting my morning on a brighter note.  I try to pack an extra treat in my lunch.
I have even gone so far as to start weekend chores on Thursday in the effort to trick myself into believing it will give me extra time on the weekends.  I'll let you in on a little secret...it doesn't work.  Somehow the chores multiply and my time doesn't.

What are your tricks for getting through the long days?  Please, share!!  I'm desperate!!

Losing Balance

My latest endeavor has been an attempt to find more balance in my life between what needs to be done and including joy.  As this post is obviously about 18 hours late...you can tell it is not going that well this week!

Usually I have all my blog posts for the week done by Sunday afternoon.  Because of events beyond my control, I was unable to accomplish that goal this weekend.  From there, it just snowballed!

It seems my shortcomings are multiplying this week.  At least that is my perception!  It appears that I am falling further and further behind.  I think I will just blame it on the full moon!

It's late, the post is overdue, and I still have miles to go!  Sleep well, my darlings!

The Urge to Nest

As the weather cools, my urge to nest goes into overdrive.

The fall brings out my urge to bake, get out my craft supplies, and basically become a hermit.  I don't know if it is a leftover vestige from my childhood in Wisconsin or just a basic human instinct, but there is something about the cooler temperatures that makes me into even more of a homebody than I normally am.

I have already begun my jewelry making for gifts and there is a batch of brownies planned for this week also.

A true sign of fall in my home is the whistling of the teakettle.  Yes, I'm old school...I still heat my water for tea in a vintage Paul Revere teakettle.  There is something about the ritual of making my tea that is comforting and homey.

What makes it feel like fall for you?  Do you also have a tendency to nest?  Please share!

A Fall Day

It finally got cooler down here in the South!  It was a beautiful day yesterday with wonderful breeze, clear skies, and gorgeous water.

I took full advantage of the fall weather.  I stayed away from my usual soda yesterday and honored the fall weather with a huge mug of peppermint tea with honey.  Instead of my usual 90 mph day, I slowed down and enjoyed cuddling up with a good book.

I capped off the day with a pot of chili.  I hadn't had any in months...I have to say, it was delicious!!  And of course, that bowl of chili was accompanied by watching the latest Transformers movie with my son.

All in all...a perfect fall day!  How are you celebrating the cooler weather?

All About the Box

One of the newest beauty trends is "the box".  Birchbox, Julep, and a multitude of other companies are offering subscription services where you receive a box every month containing samples of various beauty products.  Most of these services, to be quite honest, are out of my price range.  However, Walmart has also started a beauty box service that is more in my budget.

The Walmart Beauty Box comes four times a year.  You don't actually pay for the box, but there is a flat rate shipping fee of $5.00 per box.  That's a whopping $20 for the whole year!!  I've already received my first box.  Check it out...you'll see I received well in excess of what I paid for shipping!

Okay...first, let's just ignore the fact that I haven't set the date on my camera.  Moving on...

The box did contain a couple of samples...you'll see there was a sample of Juicy perfume and a sample of Clear shampoo/conditioner.  Those, however, were the only sample sizes in the box.  The Secret deodorant, Olay moisturizer, CoverGirl lipstick and L'oreal Revitalift were all full size products.  Just the Secret deodorant alone more than makes up for the $5.00 shipping fee!

This is the box as pictured on the Walmart Beauty Box website:
Obviously...I did not receive exactly what was pictured in the box.  However, I am more than happy with what I did receive and have absolutely no complaints!

If you want to try an inexpensive beauty box that offers great value, head over to the Walmart Beauty Box at https://beautybox.walmart.com/

My Beautiful Women

I am extremely blessed with those who love me.  Recently, Tiny Prints offered a free personalized coffee mug for just the price of shipping.  I took advantage of the offer and I now have a way to keep the beautiful women in my life with me all day.

Here in my hands, first thing every morning, are some of the most beautiful, talented, loving, caring, and compassionate women in the world.  My life is incredibly richer because they are in it.  My youngest son is also on the mug as he has been by my side through some wonderful and some terrible times and I rely so much on his support and love.

Keep an eye out on sites such as Tiny Prints, Shutterfly, and others for deals such as this.  It is a beautiful way to start your day with a cup of joy.

It's October?!?!?!?

It's the first of October!  How did this happen?  Where did the rest of the year go?

October means it is time to prepare for the holidays.  First is Halloween.  Depending on your scale of celebration, this may just mean picking up some candy or it might entail a full week of decorating the yard and entry to delight the trick-or-treaters.

November...the month of planning.  First, you plan for Thanksgiving.  What will you prepare, how many are coming, what decorating will you do?  Don't forget the two to three days of chopping, prepping, baking, and cooking.  Then there is the cleanup of the aftermath.  Of course, we can't forget the official start of Christmas madness!

December...I'm already stressed!  The shopping, the wrapping, the hiding, the crafts, the food, the BUDGET!!  How do we women survive this madness year after year?  Better question...why do we do this to ourselves???

It's the first of October.  I hereby vow to begin making my handmade gifts right now!  Halloween will be a minimum of decoration with tons of candy.  Thanksgiving will be delicious...but we won't be eating it for two weeks!  The rest of the year...well, I'll probably fly by the seat of my pants as always!

What are you looking forward to as we finish out 2014?  How do you stay sane?

Love,
Jerri

Too Many Critics

The other day on Facebook, my attention was caught by a meme.  All of our news feeds are cluttered with them, but this one jumped off the screen.

"Be an encourager.  The world has plenty of critics already".

Go back and read that again.  Think about the last few days.  Did you encourage someone?  Or did you complain or criticize?

We are all guilty of excess criticism.  With women, it has become a national sport.  We pick apart anyone who lives in a different way from us.  It doesn't even have to be a large difference.  I have witnessed women denigrating another based solely on the year of the make of her car.  Really???

How many times have you seen slideshows of "Walmart People" on social media?  Why would anyone think it was acceptable to not only take someone's photo while they are shopping, but to hold them up to ridicule on an international stage?

Then we have the foodies.  Whether through ignorance of those who live in food deserts or just plain meanness, I have frequently seen criticism of individuals based solely on their dinner choice.  Who are we to judge anyone by such a standard?

The world needs more encouragers.  Smile at the woman you pass in Walmart.  Compliment the janitor on a job well done.  As you pass the security guard, wish him a pleasant evening.

These are not impossible tasks.  All they require is a split second of thought before the mouth is opened or the enter key is pressed.  Give it a try -- be an encourager.

Jerri

Why I Walked

This past weekend I participated in the American Heart Association 5k.  I was asked why and here is my reply.

I live in this community.  I work here.  I play here.  One of the responsibilities of being part of a community is that you also participate in that community.  My chosen method of participation is charity walks.

Why charity walks?  I have a few reasons.  One, it raises money for that specific cause.  The most popular are heart, diabetes, leukemia, and breast cancer.  Two, my ancient fat butt needs the exercise!  Living in the South, however, the walks are limited to the colder months of the year.  Third, the walks enable me to spend time with my friends.  We chat as we walk and get to spend a quality hour together.

This type of opportunity and thousands more are available in your community also.  Volunteer at a local school or library.  Walk the dogs at the shelter.  Deliver meals to the elderly.  There are too many to list.

Our communities only become better when the residents participate.  What can you do to better your home?

Jerri

Free Friday

To go along with your weekend assignment, this Friday I challenge you to find your joyful moments this weekend without spending a dime.

Yep...not one single penny!

Look around.  You already have books you haven't read.  Sitting outside is free.  You probably already have your favorite coffee/tea bought...you just haven't taken the time to sit and enjoy the brewing process and drinking it at leisure.

Taking a walk doesn't cost a thing.  Listening to the birds sing is free too!  There are millions of ways to find joy in this world without spending any money at all.

Let me know next week how you did!  I can't wait to hear what joy you experienced...for free!

Jerri

A Weekend Assignment

I have an assignment for you this weekend.  I want all of you to take time this weekend to find the simple joys in your life.  Put off the grocery store for an hour.  Take your favorite book, a cup of tea, and head outside to your special spot.

Take just a few minutes and be still.  Not too long, the purpose isn't to take a nap!!  Just a few minutes to breathe and gather in the beauty that surrounds you...it will do you wonders.

Cuddle up with your dog.  Spend a few minutes throwing the ball and enjoying their joy.

Snuggle up with your cat.  Feel those purrs deep down.  Reward them with a bit of catnip.

Take just a few minutes this weekend to experience joy.  I wish you a peaceful, joyful weekend.

Jerri

Simple Joys

This past weekend, the weather was beautiful and I spent a good bit of time outside in my backyard.  While I was enjoying the somewhat cooler temperatures, I stilled myself and observed my surroundings.

My backyard is lush and green.  Because of that, we have an abundance of wildlife that visits.  Saturday, I noticed that my yard was full of butterflies and honeybees.  What a beautiful sight!  Watching the honeybees visit the jasmine and the butterflies coming in and out of the yard filled my soul and brought me simple joy.

On Sunday, the backyard visits were filled more with chores, but when I stopped to rest, I noticed a multitude of brightly colored dragonflies all over the yard.  Their jewel tones flashed in the sunlight, and I reveled in the beauty.

Each morning as I drive to work, my route takes me right along the beach.  Whether sunny or gray, it is a beautiful vista and the perfect way to begin my day.

Look around you.  There is beauty everywhere.  Still yourself for just a few minutes and actually see it.  Let it fill your soul with joy.  That joy brings peace and contentment.  Those are incredible benefits from such tiny things as bees and butterflies.

Dirty Little Secrets

Not the kind you're thinking of!!  It's Monday...way too early in the week for that!  These are the little quirks each of us has that other people don't know.

We all have funny little habits that we never actually publicize.  Most of them are no big deal, we just never think to share them.  I'll go first and share some of mine...but y'all had better follow my lead!!

1.  I love Cap'n Crunch with Crunchberries...straight out of the box, dry, no milk whatsoever.

2.  I'm using a vape to quit smoking.  Truth...I actually use it in addition to smoking!

3.  My language in traffic would make a sailor blush.

4.  I'm addicted to barware.  I have enough (along with the alcohol) to throw a major party every weekend.  Truth...I only have one or two drinks...a month.

5.  My alarm clock numbers have to be lit in red.  If there is a blue light on in my bedroom, it will wake me up.

6.  I despise ceiling fans.  If I didn't live in the deep South...I would rip every single one out and replace them with chandeliers!

Okay...I've gotten the list started.  Time to 'fess up!  What are some of YOUR dirty little secrets?

Donating

Over the past couple of years, I have taught you various means and methods for obtaining free shampoo, deodorant, etc.  As we have been talking this week about domestic violence, now is the time to put those skills to good use.

Gather up your samples.  If you are like me, you have piles of them.  Sort out any hygienic supplies, anything for children, vitamins, and even makeup samples.

Find the donation point for your local women's shelter.  It more than likely won't be located at the shelter as those locations remain hidden for safety.  Bag or box up your samples and donate them to the women's shelter in your area.

A majority of these women and children flee with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.  They are in need of the most basic of supplies.  Any donation is appreciated and will be used.  If possible, also sort through your children's old toys and books.  Give a child in a shelter something they can call their very own.

You don't have to be rich to help.  Even the least among us have aid to offer a women in need.

Love,
Jerri

Not Always on the Outside

Domestic abuse is not always visible.  Verbal and emotional abuse does not leave bruises and scars that can be seen.  Those bruises and scars are still there.

There is a far greater incidence of verbal and emotional abuse opposed to physical abuse.  The punches make a better news story.  Unless witnessed by others, verbal and/or emotional abuse is often ignored by society.  The opinion seems to be that if a woman was emotionally or mentally stronger, this wouldn't happen to her.

Any woman who has survived this type of abuse will attest that strength of any sort has nothing to do with it.  Even the strongest among us will break under constant derision, name-calling, and hate.  Even the strongest spirit will bend under unceasing winds of anger.

Only removing yourself from such a situation allows you to rebuild your strength.  The love of family and friends rebuilds the spirit and you eventually rediscover you.  That is an incredible feeling of peace and joy.  Getting there does require forgiveness...not for the benefit of the offender, but for your own peace.  However, forgiveness does not mean forgetfulness.  It is still up to you to guard your heart and your spirit to prevent any recurrence.  Again, with love and support, you can do just that.

Remember, not all abuse is on the outside.  If you see a woman being degraded, yelled at, or called names...step up and say something.  She may not be ready to hear it; but when she is, she will remember your love and support.

Love,
Jerri

#WhyIStayed

The latest trending hashtag, #WhyIStayed, is an effort by formerly abused women to end the victim blaming that often follows a highly publicized incident of domestic violence.  There are as many different reasons for staying as there are domestic violence survivors.

#WhyIStayed

1.  I thought I could love him through it.  I thought my love was strong enough to fix it.

2.  I stayed because of the kids.  I didn't want them to be without their father.

3.  I couldn't afford to leave.  He controlled all the money.

4.  I had nowhere to go.  He had alienated all of my friends and family.

5.  I believed if he just quit drinking/gambling/drugs; it would be better.

6.  He promised it would never happen again.

7.  What if it really is my fault?

8.  If I leave, I'll lose my insurance for me and/or the kids.

9.  The house and cars are all in his name...I'll have nothing.

10. What if no one wants/loves me ever again?

When you are in a domestic violence situation, any of the above reasons and a million more are as valid as the perception.  They cause paralyzing fear.  It is nearly impossible to see the light, peace, and joy that may be waiting.  That is why women stay.  Some are never able to leave.  Some die before they can.  If you need to leave, reach out.  There are people and resources to help you.

Jerri

Red Flags

There is a wonderful organization known as the Battered Womens Foundation.  You can find them on Facebook here .  They are currently posting "Red Flags" which every woman needs to read and think about.  If only one seems it might fit, you may be okay.  If you are finding multiple flags that depict your life, it is time to take action.  Here are just a few:

RED FLAGS:
Makes vulgar comments about or others.

Does he make inappropriate racial remarks?  Does he engage in gay-bashing or woman-bashing?  These are danger signs of a deep-seated hate and anger.

RED FLAGS:
Lies to you, doesn't show up for dates,or even disappears for days.

Are the lies constant?  Does he justify them by saying he didn't want to have to listen to you complain?  It is not your fault he did not tell the truth.  Ever.

RED FLAGS:
Won't listen to you or show interest in your opinions or feelings; things always have to be done their way.

Does he belittle your amount of education, your intelligence, or that your gender invalidates your opinion?
Regardless of any of those factors, your opinion, thoughts, and feelings have value.

RED FLAGS:
Is always angry at someone or something.

It can be politics, his mother, his family, his ex, you, the weather, or just life in general.  The anger is always there, seething just beneath the surface...but it is never his fault, his actions, or his responsibility.  He will never be remorseful or accountable...it is always your problem, you are too sensitve, or he is just misunderstood.  Wrong.  It is what it is...and it is NOT your fault.

These are just a few of the Red Flags listed on the page.  Do more than a few look familiar?  Ask for help...NOW.  Your friends, family, and helplines are ready and waiting with open arms to get you safe.

Jerri

A Needed Repeat

With the recent dominance of the news by domestic violence, I thought it an appropriate time to repeat a post I wrote back on January 16th of this year.  When I wrote the post, the friend it was written for was not ready to listen.  She's ready now.  At the same time, I have to confess that I was also in an abusive situation and I was in total denial.  I'm not in denial anymore.  Here is the post:

How to even begin this post.  This subject cuts so deep and so personally that I'm almost at a loss for the words to express how I feel.

What do you do when a friend has made the conscious and willing decision to stay with her abuser?  Do you remain silent?  Doesn't that actually enable the abuser?  I choose not to remain silent.

I will not listen to the justifications and the excuses.  I will throw the bullshit flag every time I hear one.  There is no justification for verbal, physical, or emotional abuse.  There is no excuse.

"But he's changing...it's getting better".  No...he's not and it's not.  It's called a honeymoon phase and that is exactly what it is...a phase.  Phases end and eventually he will get angry again.  Everything will come crashing down and he will make it all your fault.

"He's helping me correct my behavior so I'm a better person."  No...he's not.  He is controlling you.  He is not your priest or pastor.  He is not your teacher or principal.  He is not your supervisor or employer.  He is not your daddy or your father.  It is not his place to "correct" your behavior.  You are a beautiful, smart, talented woman.  If YOU see something in your life that YOU want to change, that is completely up to YOU.

Where do I get off saying all this?  What gives me the right?

1.  I'm your friend.  We've been friends for a long time.  Being your friend means all of it.  Not just when we're out having a drink, going shopping, or chatting on the phone.  It means all the time and all the messes.

2.  I love you.  Unconditionally.  That doesn't mean you get an automatic pass.  It means I will tell you how I feel because I love you.  I know what an incredible woman you are.

3.  Been there, done that.  I have a two inch scar on my face that reminds me daily about the incredibly hard lesson I learned.  I would do anything to save you from facing that same lesson in the mirror.  The scar, that any time I hear a couple arguing, I find my hand unconsciously moving to trace.

This past year, I lost a friend to a domestic violence murder.  I am not willing to lose another when there is something I can do; even if it is just saying how I feel.

I will not be silent.  I will not lose you too.

With all my love,
Jerri

Some Don'ts for Frugal Friday

I have to admit...it was pretty tough to come up with a Frugal Friday post and stay with this week's "Scary as Hell" theme.  After pondering it for quite a while...this is what I've got:

There is a huge trend on Facebook right now for local garage sale and for sale pages.  While this allows people to sell their excess stuff, raise bill money, or dispose of those bridesmaid dresses, there are some things to avoid to make sure your experience doesn't become scary as hell.

1.  Don't accept anything except cash for your goods.  I don't care what kind of sob story someone comes up with...no payment plans, no checks, and no credit cards!!

2.  Don't meet anywhere other than a public place!  A mall parking lot (they have security and cameras) or a fast food restaurant will work just fine.

3.  Don't be alone at home if the item is so big it must be picked up.  If you are a woman, grab your husband, boyfriend, or guy friend to hang out with you so you are not alone.  It sounds sexist but it is truly just common sense.

4.  Don't represent your items as something they are not.  The people on these pages are ruthless when it comes to outing someone for selling inferior or broken goods.

5.  Don't make a promise to pick something up and not show.  Again, you will be called out publicly and it may result in your banishment from the page.

Follow these few helpful tips and it should deter your experience from becoming "scary as hell"!!

Jerri

What If?

This week, keeping with "scary as hell", I have decided that today is "What If" Wednesday.  I'll pose the questions.  Answer them privately (or publicly if you're brave) and add your own "What If" to the list.

1.  What if I am alone?

2.  What if he/she doesn't love me as much as I love him/her?

3.  What if my child gets in trouble?

4.  What if my car finally gives out?

5.  What if I lose my job?

6.  What if I lose my home?

7.  What if my friends aren't there for me?

8.  What if I can't make the bills?

9.  What if the darkness I feel is overwhelming?

10. What if the pain is still there?

These aren't easy "what ifs."  As a matter of fact, they are scary as hell.  But every single one of them has a worst case scenario that can be overcome, lived through, and emerged from into a new life.

Look at your answers.  Did you imagine the worst case scenario for each?  Review them, and think about what you need, would, should, or could do to get out of that scenario.  Those are your true answers to the questions.

Scary as hell?  You bet!!  Life-altering?  Often.  Will you make it through?  I have no doubt.

Today's Challenge

Following along with yesterday's "scary as hell" theme; today I face a new challenge.

I graduated with my associate's degree in May.  Today I return to my classroom to speak!  Yep...right back to scary as hell!

It's not that I don't know my topic...I do.  It's not that I don't know what to say...I do.  It goes right back to that fear of the unknown.

What if I'm asked something I can't answer?  Well, duh...say so and get the answer to them later.  What if I stutter, stumble over my words, or hell, just plain trip?  I'll get up, brush myself off, and keep right on going!

I know down deep that I can do this.  Even though it is scary as hell...forward I go!

Jerri

Scary as Hell

Starting over is scary...scary as hell.

I received a phone call from a dear friend.  She is in a situation that she knows she needs to leave; but fear has her frozen.  I've been there.  I stayed in an unhealthy realtionship way past when I should have ran for the hills.  Fear is not only a powerful motivator; it's also a formidable wall.

When I spoke with her, I reminded her that it could be done, that I was in the process of doing just that, and yes...it is scary as hell.  The unknown is a place of unknown dangers but it is also a place of yet to be discovered joys.

Taking that leap is scary as hell.  What is courage?  Being afraid and doing it anyways.  You can always imagine a million reasons why the status quo is the safest route.  Those same million reasons are also the same as to why you should go.  And yes...it's scary as hell.

I tempered my advice with the disclaimer that it was coming from a bonehead (me) who had made some hideously horrible choices.  I survived intact and the peace I now enjoy is greater than any fear.  I won't lie, the fear still pops up its ugly head now and again but moving forward is the cure.  It is scary as hell.

Take the leap.  I promise you will grow wings on the way down.  And yes...it is scary as hell.  It can be done.

From The Gulf Coast

Since I have been living on the Gulf Coast, I have become a huge fan of seafood for breakfast!  Here is an easy and delicious meal:

Crabmeat Quiche

Ingredients:

3 eggs, beaten
1 8 oz. carton of sour cream
8 oz. crabmeat (Use fresh...but if you don't live in Paradise...canned will do!)
1/2 cup grated Mozzarella cheese
1 9-inch unbaked pie crust

Directions:

Combine beaten eggs and sour cream in a medium sized bowl.  Blend in crabmeat and cheese.  Add garlic salt and pepper if desired. (I do!)  Pour into the pie crust.  Bake at 350 degreese for 35 minutes.  Garnish with salsa or chives as desired.

Enjoy!!!

Moneymakers

The Moneymakers page on the blog has been updated!  One that proved more hassle than profit has been deleted.

Another that has again become active has been updated with a new referral link!  See the Superpoints entry.

Remember,  these moneymakers do not replace your 9-5 income!!  They are simply an easy, stress-free way to make a little extra pocket money.

Christmas is coming!!  A few Amazon gift cards will definitely come in handy!

A Full Heart Wahoo Wednesday

Last week I did my Wahoo Wednesday about the women in my life.  This week I want to honor a very special man.

I say man, but I have to admit that a lot of the time I still think of him as my little boy.  My son has grown into an incredible man.

When I graduated a few months ago, my son flew in for the graduation ceremony.  Not liking what he saw about my living situation, he returned to Texas, packed up his belongings, and moved here to take care of me.  I didn't know that at the time...I thought he just moved here to be closer to me.  It wasn't until months later that he told me that he knew he needed to protect me.

And protect me he has.  He watches over me like a hawk, making sure that my safety and happiness are paramount.  There is no woman in the world who has a better, more loving son.  He is a gentleman and a gentle soul.

From checking each day to make sure I've eaten (I have a tendency to forget) to making sure that I am safe and secure, he exemplifies the very definition of a good son.

I am incredibly blessed.

Full Speed Ahead!

My life has done a complete 180 lately.  I am busy, happy, and on the go all the time!

Every morning, I drive along the beach to get to work.  Even on rainy days, there is a pure beauty to the beach and water.  It comforts my soul and I am in fabulous mood when I get to work!

I have a job I love.  I am constantly learning new things and as a paralegal, the field of law absolutely fascinates me.  I can't think of a better way to spend my days then doing something that engages my brain and which I adore.

When I get home, I'm greeted at the door by two excited dogs, spinning in circles with joy.  They eat, and we head out into the yard for them to play, wrestle, and chase tennis balls.  Such a huge change from just a few months ago when my Aussie would hide under my desk the entire day.  She is such a happy dog now!

Once I get them exhausted enough to settle down, it's my time for chores, writing, and doing my online moneymakers.  And before I even blink, it's time to head to bed!!

Somewhere in all this, I fit in time for classes, workshops, association meetings, dating, and the too rare phone calls to friends (which I'm trying to do better at!).  I am incredibly blessed to have the life I do and I am well aware of how it could have been so different.

Take a look around your life.  Are there things you would change if you could?  Do you believe you can't?  I'm a living testament to the fact that it is never too late.  Don't stay in a situation where you are in danger or unhappy because you think there is no alternative.  I'm not promising an easy go of it...it's not.  But it is absolutely worth the peace.  You can do this.

Jerri

Cookbooks

Not a recipe for today, but today's post is still recipe related.

Look at your cookbooks.  Quite a few probably haven't been touched in a while because you know the recipes you like by heart.  Don't throw those books away!!

Before you toss, donate, or recycle...look through those books one more time.  Are there certain recipes in them that your kids loved?  Don't let those cherished recipes from their childhood disappear.  Sort through the books, separating them into piles by which child would most enjoy which recipes.

When my grandmother passed away, most of her recipes were lost forever as they had never been written down.  To this day, I still cannot recreate them and make them taste the same as they did when Grandma made them.

Give your children a head start.  Pass down those cookbooks.  Tag the pages for their favorites, and write your own personalized notes in the margins.  It will turn an old, used cookbook into a family treasure.

Jerri

Catch Those Savings!

By now, you've probably seen the ads for the WalMart Savings Catcher.  There are two ways to catch your savings.

The first is to log on to the website.  You can find it at:  https://savingscatcher.walmart.com/ .  After registering, you will be able to enter your receipt number.  Warning:  the receipt must be entered within 7 days.  If it is past the 7 day mark, it will not allow you to enter that receipt.

The other option is to download the Savings Catcher app for your phone.  At the bottom of your receipt, you'll notice a QR code.  The app will scan the QR code and load your receipt into the Savings Catcher.

Savings Catcher will then compare the items on your receipt to other stores in your area.  If it finds a lower price, the difference is deposited in your account up to a yearly maximum of $599.00.  It takes two to three days for the comparison and you will receive an email when each receipt has been completed.  The money you save is put on a WalMart gift card that can be used online or in stores.

I've entered about five receipts so far.  My total savings?  Zero.  But I figure sooner or later I'll get something and I'm going to the store anyways...I might as well try to save a bit more!

Let me know what you save!

The Power of Laughter

As I write, I am listening to my son play video games with a friend.  The peals of laughter coming from that room warms my heart.  That kind of laughter has been missing from my life for quite a while and it is a welcome return.

Even if you are not the one laughing, it is such a gift to hear someone you love having fun and enjoying themselves.  It reminds you that there is joy in the world and even if you don't have a grasp on that joy right this second...it's just around the corner.

I have laughed a lot these last couple of months, including a number of times where I've laughed until I cried.  Pure, unadulterated joy has returned and I see joy in a multitude of ways every single day.  Each morning as I smell the sea breeze, enjoy my morning cup of coffee, and watch the dogs play in the yard...I realize I am blessed and I am joyful.  I laugh at the dogs' antics and it's the perfect way to begin my day.

Look around.  I guarantee you will find something to smile at, if not laugh aloud.  Joy and laughter are there for the taking.  Reach out and grab yours.

Jerri

Wahoo Wednesday!

I haven't done a Wahoo Wednesday in a while so here goes!

Today's Wahoo Wednesday goes out to the women in my life.  From my sisters (blood and otherwise), to my friends, to my mentors; I cannot say enough wonderful things about the women in my life.

Too often we see and hear media reports of women attacking one another.  Whether it's working moms vs. stay-at-home, white collar vs. blue, Democrat vs. Republican; not a day goes by where one woman is not publicly attacking another.  I must be one of the luckiest women on earth.

My friends and family are loving, supportive, steadfast, and true.  They lift me up when I fall, are proud of me when I do well, and are not afraid to give me a reality check when I need one.  They are the most incredible women and I am so proud to know each and every one of them.

This Wahoo Wednesday, reach out to the women in your life.  Let them know how valued they are and let them know how much they are loved.

I just did.

Jerri

A Brand New Me

The last few months (or year) have been an absolute hell.  There's not a pretty way to describe it.  However, I will not allow the past to dictate my future except where it serves as a warning.

I have immersed myself joyfully in my new life.  I have decorated my new home, started attending classes and workshops to learn new things, and I enjoy every second at my new job.  There were a whole lot of "news" in that sentence!!

And "new" is okay!!  There is no law that says you can't reinvent yourself or expand your horizons once you're over 50 years old.  As a matter of fact, the maturity and life lessons you have accumulated along the way make this the perfect time to do just that!

Don't leave everything in the past, however.  Carry those that love you with you into the future.  A good friend is a treasure that can never be left behind.  I am blessed with the best!!

As I move forward, remember you can also.  There is nothing stopping you...except you.  If you need some encouragement, hit me up!!  You have all my support!

Time to Grieve

Back in June, I lost my mother.  It was not unexpected, but you can never really be ready.  A couple of days after that, my fiance broke our engagement.  It actually felt like I had been hit by a semi which then turned around and ran over me again.

After all that, I was extremely stressed, both about bills and my mother.  I was told, "There's no point in worrying about it; it's not like you can do anything about it."  Picture the sound of a slamming cell door on Alcatraz.  That is what it felt like happened to my emotions.  A door slammed shut, and I was unable to feel anything.

Now that my life is back on track, I have been taking the time to grieve.  Not only for the loss of my mother, but I also needed time to grieve the loss of a love I had come to learn was naught but a false illusion.  Regardless, it tore my heart apart and time alone is putting it back together.

It is important to remember that just as we celebrate the joyous moments in life; we also need to grieve the horrendous losses.  Pretending that the past doesn't exist, that it didn't happen, only buries the pain.  It doesn't dispel it or mitigate it over time.  The loss of my mother is something from which I shall never truly recover from but the pain lessens with each day and the memories will always be with me.

Take the time you need to grieve your losses.  It is your pain and time limits or grief restrictions are not the place or right of anyone else.  Only you can tell when you are truly healed.  Do not let anyone dictate otherwise.

Jerri

Frugal Friday!

Last night I attended a new event and had an absolute blast!! Home Depot runs a workshop once a month called "Do It Herself".  I learned to build my own rolling cart!

The workshops are free, but you do have to pay for your own supplies.  I didn't know that beforehand but I was lucky enough to take home the one we worked on in the class!  I still have to finish it which is why you don't have a picture yet.  I'll update this post when it's done!

I thoroughly enjoyed the instructor, the other women I met, and the project itself.  At times, we had trouble getting work done because we were laughing so hard!  Not always a good thing when you're holding a hammer!

To register for the workshops--just go to homedepot.com.  Click the workshop tab and find the next workshop in your area.  You can search by zipcode.  If you have children, they also run kids' workshops!

I highly recommend it!  Take a girlfriend, plan to stop for a glass of wine afterwards and make an evening of it!

Love,
Jerri

UPDATE!!!!

I said I would post a picture when finished.  I didn't get to it last night due to the fact I had a date (a great one, by the way!) but I did finish it this morning!  Here's the finished product...it might not be pretty, but I did by myself...and it rolls!!!

The Woman in the Mirror

There's a meme that is frequently posted on social media that says:

An honorable aspiration and with the way I adore my rescue Aussie, Emma; one I can truly understand!

Reading the comments on the blog post yesterday and the emails and Facebook comments I received, I realized that I also want to be the person my friends see.  I would like nothing more than the woman I see reflected in the mirror to match the woman my friends see.  Right now, I'm not there.  I am on my way, though, and my goal is for those women to be one in the same.  Currently, I'm probably about halfway between what I had become convinced I was and the woman my friends insist I am.  But the fog on the mirror is clearing more day by day.

What man or woman do you see in the mirror?  Do you see what someones has cut you down to be or what is truly you?  Has your mirror been fogged by the vitriole and disparagement of others?  How do you dispel the fog?

Let me know your thoughts and tactics for clearing that pesky fog!!

On The Wings of Angels

Over the last couple of years, my domestic situation had completely broken my spirit.  It is a daily effort for me to try and mute that voice which lingers.

Luckily for me, I am blessed with a multitude of angels.  I have the most incredible friends and family who remind me daily that "Bitch" is neither a term of endearment nor my name.

They emphasize that "just an associate's degree" is plenty.  They point out how hard I worked to obtain that degree and how proud they are of me.

My friends and family have gone above and beyond these last few months to lift my spirits, my ego, and my heart out of the depths in which I had become mired.  I have been lifted on their wings until I can fly with my own.

Granted, I am well aware that I frustrate the hell out of them some days!!  On those days, that voice that still remains in my head is louder than theirs, and louder than other days.  But they don't give up on me.  They love me and lift me higher.

My name is not "Bitch".  My name is Mom, Grandma, Sis, and Friend.

Yes, I have an associate degree.  I busted my ass for that degree; I completed a two-year program in only sixteen months and graduated at the top of my class with a 3.9 GPA.  That "Just an associate's degree" obtained me a job I absolutely adore and I am blessed.

I am beautiful.  (ok, that one is still a stretch!)  But I have friends and even ex-boyfriends who have gone out of their way to remind me of that.  Until the last couple months, I hadn't heard those words in over two years.

Bless my angels.  They will not let me fall.  One day, I will fly alone.  Until then, I don't have to worry...there is always an angel by my side.

Jerri

Hmmm...

In the past, I've frequently utilized Mondays for whatever rant I need to get off my chest.  That way, I've cleared the air at the beginning of the week and don't carry the poison with me.  That premise got me thinking and I (and you) have something to ponder this Monday.

Getting my rants out on Monday to clear them from my life got me thinking about Karma.  Very often, people make the assumption that when karma comes around, it will be a big, bombastic event making it obvious to the world that karma has come into play.  That's not quite the way I view it.

I believe that karma is more a stain on your soul (or your essence, if you prefer) from your past actions.  If you have done vile things, I believe they leave an imprint that you carry with you and which colors your future.  While it is all well and good to proclaim that you must forget the past in order to move forward, it is also incredibly naive to believe that the energy and actions you have sent out into the universe don't linger.  I believe that is why so many twelve-step programs and others like them include making amends as such a large, integral part of recovery.

You truly cannot move forward without healing the wounds you have caused in the past.  To carry such a stain on your soul jeopardizes everything and everyone in your future.  The flip side, of course, is forgiveness of those you believe have harmed you.  Carrying the pain and anger prevents you from making any amends you personally need to make and removing your own stains.

Like I said...just something I was pondering this morning.  Hopefully, I gave you something to ponder also!

Jerri

On My Way

I've been absent for a while but I'm on my way back!  Thank you for those who've stuck by this blog...and sent me private messages wondering when I'll be back.  I'm on my way.

It has been a hell of a journey the last few months and there are definitely things I would like to examine and share.  As always, I will take you with me!

I know today is supposed to be Frugal Friday so I won't let you down.  Here is today's tip:

Hug the ones you love!  It's free...can be sent virtually...and can change that person's whole day.  Too often, we take those in our lives for granted.  Give them a hug.

With huge hugs from me to you...

Frugal Friday

This Frugal Friday is more of a lifestyle hack.  There's a website my son found that really helps use up what you already have in the house!

Head over to:  http://myfridgefood.com/

You'll see a checklist.  Check off everything you have on hand and the website will give you recipes using only the ingredients you already have!

Right now we're on a seriously strict budget making the transition from college to work.  There are bills to catch up on from the college days and the paychecks are just starting from the new job.  This website is handy for stretching those groceries!

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Wahoo Wednesday!!!!!!!!

It's Wahoo Wednesday!!

I have so many to shout out this Wednesday I don't even know where to begin!

To my friend, L., I don't know what I would do without your unwavering love and support.  You are my backbone, the earth under my feet, and the wind beneath my wings.  I love you!!

To my son, T., you have made me the proudest mother ever!!  You are a kind, empathetic, honorable young man and my heart overflows with pride and joy!

To T., my better half...You have been so incredibly supportive of my journey, I don't even have words.  You are the reason I cannot wait to get home every day.

The degree I earned belongs to these three just as much as it does to me.  Without all three of them, I would never have made it.  I am a very lucky woman.

The Freshman Fifteen

The freshman fifteen...the curse of every college student.  What they don't tell you is that it doesn't just hit the kids...

I didn't start college until age 50.  The last thing I expected was to put on weight!  Now how do I get rid of it????

I barely have my work and sleep schedule figured out...when am I going to fit in a workout?  I know I need to...but I am so tired....

I'm not going to worry about it this week...I'm still trying to get the daily stuff evened out.  Next week, I hope to at least fit in a couple of hours on the recumbent bike.  That way, I can read while I pedal and get two things done at once!

This freshman fifteen has got to go....SOON!!!

What A Week!!

Last week was my first week employed after college!!

I am so fortunate to have found a job right after graduation in my actual field.  I was given a guardian angel as one of my graduation gifts and I'm pretty sure she's on the job!!

I didn't get lost getting to work.  I found the parking lot I'm supposed to use.  I packed my lunch every day and didn't starve all week.

Granted, I was not as organized as I could have been.  Time seemed to run extremely short once I got home in the afternoon so I have more work to do on that.  I've already laid out my clothes for this week so I'm a bit farther ahead of the game than last week.

I am learning so many new things every day.  At this stage of my life, I am incredibly blessed to be learning and growing!

Hang in there with me...I'll be here more often as I get this new life under control!

Jerri

Over!!

My waiting game is over!  Less than two weeks since I graduated...I have a job!!

I start this morning.  I am beyond excited to be starting a new phase in my life.

According to popular media and marketing, I should be on the downhill slope of life.  Ha!!!  I am living proof that you can reinvent yourself at any age.

About a year ago, I taped a segment for Mutual of Omaha for their "aha moment" campaign.  I believe this is the perfect time to revisit that moment.  Enjoy!

The Waiting Game

I've earned my degree.  I've already had a couple of job interviews.  Now the waiting game begins.

Interviews are terrifying.  Period.  Hands are sweaty, nerves are shot.  I think they are even worse when you're older and realize that those few minutes can have such a profound effect on your life.  The interviews went well as far as I can tell...but the waiting game begins.

Remember when our parents and grandparents worked at one job in one place for 20-30 years and then retired?  What ever happened to that?  Granted, I've made a total career change but perhaps the old days and old ways weren't so bad.

Well, the phone hasn't made a peep yet.  Needless to say, I'm carrying it wherever I go!  Wish me luck!!

Oh, and if you need me, I'll be right here.  Waiting.

Love,
Jerri

Snow Day 3

Cabin fever set in this morning!  Luckily, things are beginning to melt and I was able to get out of the house.

I didn't go far as most of the bridges around here are still closed.  I did make it to the Family Dollar store to grab a pizza and that most important of stores during bad weather...the liquor store!!  I am now in possession of Bailey's Caramel which is absolutely delicious when blended with ice.

I feel incredibly blessed to have been able to enjoy these days off and avoided the terrible consequences suffered in such areas as Atlanta and Birmingham.  At most, I suffered a bit of inconvenience.  My heart goes out to all more severely affected by the storm.

Stay warm, everyone!!

Today's Wahoo Wednesday is for the ice outside!  It's forcing me to behave and get my work done!

To all snowed/iced in this week...stay warm and stay safe!

Snow Day!!!

Due to the weather, I actually have a snow day!  How cool is that...to have a snow day from school at 51?

What should I do?  Sleeping in won't work...dogs just do not understand that concept at all!

Here's my list:

  1. Clean out my email.  It's scary huge!
  2. Read a book that's not a textbook.
  3. Have a mug of hot peppermint tea.
  4. Cuddle with my dog, Emma to keep warm.
  5. If there's time left over...study.
That's my plan for my snow day.  What are your favorite things to do when snowbound?

That ($*&%(#*&$(# Mirror!!

I have a confession.  I rarely look at myself in the mirror other than the rare occasions I wear makeup.  Well, I looked this past weekend and saw just what a toll my studying marathons have taken.

I never realized that exhaustion was an actual "look" but let me tell you...I have this look down pat!  I honestly look like I haven't slept in months.

As graduation rapidly approaches, I'm beginning to realize that more than my resume needs work before I enter the job market!  I am in desperate need of some anti-aging miracles, STAT!!

I think I'll begin with a nap as soon as I get home from school today.  That sounds like a plan!

A Bit Messy...

This recipe can get messy, but kids love it and I'm pretty sure the mess is part of that!

Taco Dogs

Ingredients:

One package hot dogs
10 crunchy taco shells (warmed)
10 slices American cheese
1 can pork-n-beans (heated)

Directions:

Cook hot dogs as you usually would.  After warming the taco shells, place a slice of cheese in the bottom of each shell.  Next, place a hot dog in each shell.  Finally, top the hot dog with pork-n-beans.  Serve with lots of napkins!

Enjoy!

Frugal Friday

I have a freebie for you this Friday.  The only requirement...you have to use an Android phone.  Sorry, iPhone users...it's not available for you as of right now.

Today's treat is a little app called Mr. Number.

We've all signed up on the do-not-call lists and we are all just as aware calls still get through.  By installing Mr. Number on your Android phone, you can block these calls for good.

I currently use Mr. Number myself.  When a call comes through that the app has already identified as spam, a message box pops up on my screen, identifying it as such.  I then have the option to block the call by having my phone hang up automatically.  If that number ever calls again, the hang up is automatic.  Pesky calls gone!!

If you're looking for a call-blocking application for your Android phone, check out the Mr. Number app at http://mrnumber.com/ .

Love,
Jerri

P.S.  Mr. Number also offers a premium option that is not free.  I personally have found the free version to be more than adequate!!

A New Language

I have discovered a new language in college.  It's not Spanish, French, or even American Sign Language.  No...those would all be too easy.

Where did I discover this language?  In the pages of my macroeconomics textbook.  Whatever this language is, it is completely incomprehensible.  I've never seen anything like it!

Luckily, I have a professor who has given us plenty of time to study each chapter.  Well...I'm hoping I'm lucky because right now I'm just lost!

I'll be spending this weekend in the land of macroeconomics.  It's a foreign land and frightening to navigate.  But I am going to be brave and slay this monster!

Pray for me.

Wahoo Wednesday

Today a shout-out goes to my youngest son.  He's the baby but he has grown into an amazing man.

He always manages to make me laugh.  I can be lower than low and he can make me giggle in a matter of minutes.  Granted, it's usually by aggravating me...but it works!!

He is a loving and caring man.  He cares for and takes great care of his friends and family.  He works hard and grown so much over the last few years.

He takes time out every day to check on me since I moved away a couple years ago.  That's a big deal...even for a grown woman...when you're far from family.  It says a lot about his character.

I could keep going...but I've probably already embarrassed him!  But hey...what are moms for??

At That Age

I'm at that age.  I'm an empty-nester who also happens to be a full-time college student.  Graduation is rapidly approaching so I decided to begin the hunt for a dress to wear under my gown.

Sigh...this is going to be difficult.  I'm old but I'm not my grandma.  I'm also not THAT old but I'm not a stripper either.

Am I asking too much?  I would like a dress that shows my figure, fits great, and makes me look my best.  I don't want to look matronly...I don't feel that old inside.  On the hand, I also don't want my hooha hanging out because I'm definitely too old for that!

Why are women of that age missing from the fashion world?  Granted, I'm only talking about real women.  Celebrities and movie stars in their 50's and 60's have absolutely no problem finding clothes.  I'm talking about women who can't afford an entire year's salary for one dress.  We do exist!

I'll keep you updated as my search continues.  Hopefully, it won't take too long!  After all...once I have the dress, the most important hunt begins.  The shoes!!!

Jerri

Frugal Friday

Did you survive the holiday season?  How about those credit cards...did they survive?  Belt tightening in January doesn't just mean your diet.  A lot of us are cutting back now to repair the damage of the holiday excess.

This year I used a new system for gifts.  It made it easy to decide what to buy and kept the budget in check.  This is used for those you buy multiple gifts for such as spouses and children.  It's easy to follow and takes a lot of the stress out of holiday shopping.

1.  Something you want

2.  Something you need

3.  Something to wear

4.  and Something to read

This method is especially effective for children.  Somehow our society seems to have evolved (devolved maybe?) to the point where large numbers of children are overindulged and honestly believe they should get anything they ask for.  Using this system not only keeps the parent's budget intact, but allows children to learn the value of what they receive.

Try it...it truly works!!

Jerri

I Will Not Be Silent

With all my love,
Jerri

Wahoo Wednesday

This week I would like to do a special Wahoo Wednesday.  Today is dedicated to my dearest friend, L.

Since I began school, she has been unwavering in her support of my pursuit of my goals.  From pep talks to a friendly ear when I needed to vent, she has emotionally supported me during my journey.

Part of her support has taken a more practical turn.  L. has made sure I have been supplied with printer ink since my very first class.  We are talking 67 college hours worth of printing, people!!  That alone is epic!!

Ink aside, I truly do not believe I would have made it this far without her.  Her friendship has buoyed me all year.  There was more than one instance when I wanted to give up and her faith in me kept me going.  As I approach graduation in May...I hope and pray she is there with me to share in my day.  It wouldn't have occurred without her.

My wish for you this Wahoo Wednesday?  That you have at least one friend such as L. in your life.  There is no greater blessing.

Love,
Jerri

2013-A Year of Gain and Growth

Yesterday I shared my losses of 2013.  Today I want to share the gains and growth I've experienced in the past year.

I have gained self-confidence.  Starting college at age 50 is a terrifying thing.  I've learned to trust in myself and my own abilities.  This is a much bigger thing that it sounds, as my divorce completely destroyed my self-confidence.  It's back...and so am I.

I have grown strong.  Not physically, but emotionally strong.  I am no longer willing to be treated as less than what I am worth.  It may seem I have grown hard, but that is merely my refusal to tolerate those who feel the need to criticize, demean, or diminish me in any way.  I no longer have the time or patience.  I now know I am good enough.

I have grown braver.  I drive farther, do more things alone, and handle things I never did before.  A lot of that grew out of the aftermath of divorce; but some grew as the result of my growing self-confidence.  Bravery is a self-replicating phenomenon.  The more you exhibit the behavior, the more it grows.

While I have gained and grown much in the past year, I still have a long way to go.  I hope you will join me on my continuing journey...it's going to be a hell of a ride!!

Love,
Jerri

2013- A Year of Loss

What a year.  2013 was a year of incredible loss for me.

I lost my beloved aunt/godmother.  She was that person in my life that one believes will always be there.  As I age, I realize more and more just how tenuous our hold on this live truly is and how the absence of just one can impact your life.  I miss her every day.

I lost my buddy, my black lab, Max.  He blessed me with 16 years of unconditional love.  I got him as a rescue at 8 months old.  A typical lab puppy, one of his first misadventures was eating the wall off my house.  All through my divorce and move to a new state, Max was my steady, loving companion.  When he left, a hole opened that will take forever to heal.

I lost a friend to domestic violence.  She was murdered by her abuser.  She did everything right.  She moved.  She got the restraining order.  He found her anyways and that piece of paper doesn't stop a man with the intent to kill.  In the United States, a woman is beaten every 18 minutes.  In less time than it takes you to watch a sitcom, a woman is in fear for her life.

I lost a friendship to a betrayal of a confidence.  Once the trust has been destroyed, the rock on which that friendship was built disintegrates into sand that washes away.  At this stage of my life, I have learned to let that sand slip through my fingers.  Those that wish to be in my life are here and those who do not...I wish them godspeed.

While 2013 has been a year of heartwrenching loss, it has also been a year of gain and growth.  More on that tomorrow!!

Love,
Jerri
